Hi Mr. Graves,

Depending on the parent and the game system, the options are endless.

We have six sons ranging in ages from 17 down to 6...currently.

Starting at age 4 or so...Our boys use everything from Big Brain Academy on the Wii system to the endless array of Educational games on the V-Tech Game Systems to the "campaign" mode of Halo on X-Box 360. (we keep them off-line until they are around 10 years old so they don't have to hear the "creeps" out there in cyber-land." We teach them about adult language, how to get away from those "weirdos" and deal with that kind of personality before turning them loose in cyberland. Again, this is how we teach them to cope and handle the REAL world before they leave our nest and have to do it alone.)

Our guys have played all sorts of games. Racing, Shoot-em-up, educational, ninja games on the computer... There are too many to list.

In the end, the choice for games depends on 2 things.
1. The child's ability to deal with the subject material.
2. The the parent's plan for parenting their children.

Our parenting philosophy is basically to let them be exposed to as many genres as possible as they are able to handle them. This is the same philosophy we use in camping, sports... etc.

When they want to do it, they can try it under our supervision. If it's "too much" we real them in, if they can handle it, we let them fly. We believe that we are raising Adults...not sheltering children. So we let them try, try, try as many things as possible and then let go.

Thank you. I really feel for these poor kids who have video game limitations that defeat all of their hard work. Some games won't allow them to save their work until they reach certain levels. No wonder they cry and get upset. We've given them false hopes and then jerked all their hard work out from under them AND ON TOP OF THAT we get upset at them for feeling sad. :o(
